What Alex works on

Most people spend thirty years learning how to save, and almost nobody teaches them how to spend it. That second half is where Alex spends his time: how much a family can safely spend each month, which account to draw from first, when to take Social Security, how to keep more of it away from taxes, and how to make sure a surviving spouse is taken care of.

His view is simple: in retirement, protecting against a big loss matters more than chasing a big gain. A plan should hold up in a bad year, not just a good one.

How he got here

Alex grew up watching his father, Michael Alston, work as the consultant businesses and banks called when something wasn't working. He started his own career at one of the large national firms, where he saw how little real planning most people got. He has spent ten years in the business since, and in 2026 started Alston Wealth with his brother, Andrew Alston, and their father.

Alex holds the Accredited Portfolio Management Advisor designation (APMA®). He meets with families across the country by video, writes The Retirement Paycheck, publishes free retirement videos on YouTube, and hosts a free monthly call for anyone getting close to retirement.
