The money behind the plan.

Once you are living on your savings, the job of your investments changes. Growth still matters. But a big loss at the wrong time can do damage that years of good returns will not repair.

How we invest

Avoiding a big loss comes ahead of chasing a big gain. While you are drawing money out, a sharp drop forces you to sell low to pay the bills. We would rather give up some of the best years than expose you to the worst ones.

The portfolio follows the income plan. Money you will need in the next few years is kept steady. Money you will not touch for a decade or more is invested to grow. Each part has a job, and you can see which is which.

Taxes are part of every decision. Where an investment sits — an account you pay tax on later, one you never pay tax on, or ordinary savings — matters almost as much as what it is.

Where your money is held

Your accounts stay in your name at Schwab or Fidelity, two of the largest custodians in the country. We manage the investments; we never hold your money. You can log in and see every account, every trade and every fee at any time.

What staying in touch looks like

  • Two meetings a year. Summer to plan — project your taxes, test your spending, set the year-end list. Fall to act on it before the December deadlines.
  • A report every quarter showing what you own and how it did.
  • When markets drop sharply, you hear from us right away, not weeks later.
  • The monthly call is open to you, like everyone else.
